A Super Hero Legend of India - A Thousand Year Flashback

Go To Previous Page

All wars create landmark in the human history and teach us some lessons through the outcomes. Human race has always been at war, with the right warring against wrong and vice versa.

'ANYTHING IS FAIR IN LOVE AND WAR'. The most famous as well as notorious 18 day history may be the good example for this.

KRISHNA AND KURUKSHETRA WAR:

I am the goal, the sustainer, the master, the witness, the refuge, the guardian, the well-wisher, the creation, the dissolution, the preservation, the reservoir and the imperishable cause Bhagavad Gita 9.18

Krishna was the supreme instigator of the Kurukshetra war. He never wanted to avoid it and thus never advised any of the warring parties for recourse of a different path. Duryodhana, who respected Krishna enough to have sought his advice before the war could have been persuaded by him.

Once battle seemed inevitable, Krishna offered both sides the opportunity to choose between having either his army or simply himself alone, but on the condition that he personally would not raise any weapon. Arjuna, on behalf of the Pandavas, chose to have Krishna on their side, and Duryodhana, chief of the Kauravas, chose Krishna's army. In other words, he chose to fight against his own army – something which no king has ever done unless in a situation of rebellion. At the time of the great battle, Krishna acted as Arjuna's charioteer, since it was a position that did not require the wielding of weapons.

Kauravas violation of Dharmayudha:
Krishna's role in Kurukshetra war is significant. Dharmayudha or warfare of righteousness has some rules and regulations to be followed by the warriors fighting on either sides. When Kauravas violated the rules of the war, Krishna played a cruicial role in directing Pandavas to the warfare of unrighteousness.

The "rules of ethical conduct", dharmayuddha, for the war are:
  • Fighting must begin no earlier than sunrise and end exactly at sunset.
  • More than one warriors may not attack a single warrior.
  • Two warriors may "duel", or engage in prolonged personal combat, only if they carry the same weapons and they are on the same type of mount (on foot, on a horse, on an elephant, or in a chariot).
  • No warrior may kill or injure a warrior who has surrendered.
  • One who surrenders becomes a prisoner of war and will then be subject to the protections of a prisoner of war.
  • No warrior may kill or injure an unarmed warrior.
  • No warrior may kill or injure an unconscious warrior.
  • No warrior may kill or injure a person or animal not taking part in the war.
  • No warrior may kill or injure a warrior whose back is turned away.
  • No warrior may attack a woman.
  • No warrior may strike an animal not considered a direct threat.
  • The rules specific to each weapon must be followed. For example, it is prohibited to strike below the waist in mace warfare.
  • Warriors may not engage in any unfair warfare.

The rules of the Dhrmayudha was broken by Kauravas by the slay of Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna and Krishna's sister Subhadra at the thirteenth day of the battle. Abhimanyu was taken by the Kaurava army in the Chakravyuha formation as he was one of the ferocious warrior who was a great threat to Kaurava brigade.
Abhimanyu fighting in the Chakravyuh
It is also said that only Krishna, Arjuna, Pradyuma (son of Krishna and Rukmini) know fully about the Chakravyuha formation techniquies from Pandavas side. Abhimanyu was said to have learnt the penetration of the seven tier defense Chakravyuha formation when he was in his mother's womb while Arjuna was explaning the military formation to his wife.  Since Subhadra fell asleep in the middle Arjuna was not able to explain the techniques of entry and exit in Chakravyuha fullly and hence Abhimanyu was said to know only the entry of formation and the not the exit. As the per the rules of engagement "More than one warriors may not attack a single warrior" but Abhimanyu was targeted and killed by all leading warriors of Kauravas.

Krishna's revenge via Arjuna:

Jayadratha the husband of Dushala, the only sister of Kaurava brothers played a cruicial role in Abhimanyu's slay as he prevented the Pandavas to come to the rescue of Abhimanyu. Jayadratha was given a boon by his father that whoever shall be the reason to make his son's head fall on ground shall have their head break into 100 pieces.

As a revenge of Abhimanyu's death Arjuna vowed to kill Jayadratha by the next day sunset failing which he would kill himself. On the fourteenth day, a long brigade of warriors were standing in between Arjuna and Jayadratha and Krishna found that it is impossible for Arjuna to reach him before sunset. Hence Krishna created a eclipse much like a sunset. Jayadratha was sure that Arjuna has failed in his vow and happily appeared in front of Arjuna to see him kill himself. Krishna made the solar eclipse retreat and told Arjuna to kill him as sun has not set yet. Arjuna immediately used his powerful weapon and beheaded him. Krishna made the head of Jayadratha to fall on the lap of his father. Jayadratha's father shocked on seeing a head on his lap dropped it on the ground and his head burst into pieces.

Kauravas violation of rule on the fourteenth day:
The battle continued post sunset against the another rule of engagement. Ghadodkaja, the son of Bheema and Hidimba had a special ability to fly in the air. Also he got boons from Krishna himself that he can use his power more powerfully at nights. Since war continued post sunset, Ghadodkaja fought with full power and created a havoc for Kaurava army. Dhuryodhana, requested Karna to finish him off and hence Karna used his divine weapon Indrastra which he reserved to kill Arjuna. The weapon can be used only once and he used it on Ghadodkaja and beheaded him.

Krishna smiled as Karna wasted his weapon which otherwise would have brought victory to them. With Indrastra's use Ghadodkaja was killed and the weapon returned back to Indra and Arjuna was saved.

Krishna's trickery and violation of rule on fifteenth day:
Drona most fiercly fought from Kaurava's side and Krishna planned to knock him by his weakness. Krishna instructed Bheema to kill a elephant named Aswathama which is also the name of the son of Drona and made Bheema to scream loudly Aswathama was dead. Drona seeked Yudhirstira for the truth. While Yudhirstira told 'Ashwathama Hatahath, naro va Kunjaro va' meaning Ashwathama was dead but not sure it is son or elephant. Krishna blowed the counch shell loudly and made the second half of the sentence not to be heard by Drona. Hence Drona felt sad hearing his son dead and did not fight again in the battle and subsequently beheaded by Dhristadyumna, son of Draupada and brother of Draupadi.

Krishna's rug with Karna:
Karna became the strong warrior from Kauravas's side and killed enormous number of Pandava army. Karna's chariot was stuck in the mud. At that time he had a misunderstanding with his charioteer and the charioteer left the battlefield. Karna, was trying single handedly to lift the chariot. Krishna told Arjuna to shoot the arrow on him which is against the rul of engagement. When Arjuna hesitated, Krishna reminded how Karna mercilessly killed Abhimanyu inside Chakravyuha against the rules of battle. Arjuna got angry  and shot arrow on his chest. Karna being a chariter was breathing still as his deeds protected his soul from leaving his body. Krishna disgiused himself a poor man and went to Karna while he was breathing his last breath. Krishna asked him to donate his deeds which he gained from charity. Karna knowing the trick of Krishna donated his deeds to Krishna happily as Karna never says no to anyone whoever ask him anything. As soon as Krishna got the deeds, Karna breathed his last and died.

Krishna and Duryodhana:

Gandhari, the mother of Kauravas was given as boon for her sacrifice of volutary blinding herself for the sake of her husband. Her boon was that whatever she sets eyes it shall be indestructable . She instructed Duryodhana to come naked so that she can bless his whole body as indestructable. Krishna tricked Duryodhana and made him to cover his thighs. Hence Gandhari was not able to see her son's thighs and bless thus making susceptible for attack.

At eighteenth day, when Duryodhana lost all hopes of victory Yudhirshtira gave him an option to chose a weapon and chose a fighter from Pandavas side to have a fair fight. Duryodhana chose Bhima to have a duel.

After long and fierce battle Duryodhana was exhausted. Krishna signalled Bhima by tapping his thighs and Bhima attacked Duryodhana in his thighs which was actually the violation of rules as a warrior is not supposed to be attacked below hips.

While Duryodhana was dying he told Krishna whatever victory he has got is not attained by fair means.

Krishna said. "Yes, these men truly were invincible, while fought against fairly, but I had to uphold dharma".

With Duryodhanas's death, the historical war came to an end,  leaving only 12 survivors Pandavas, Krishna from Pandavas side and Satyaki, Ashwatthama, Kripacharya, Yuyutsu, Vrishakethu (son of Karna) and Kritvarma  from Kauravas side.

BATTLE WITH ALIEN:
Srimad Bhavatha Purana and Mahabharata describes a battle of Krishna with a King called Salva. Current archealogical research suggests that the battle took place between Krishna and Salva who is an extra-terrestrial.

Salva is a friend of Shisupala. He was in the brigade of Shisupala when the later battled and killed by Krishna on the dispute of the wedlock with Rukmini. Hence Salva got vengence with Krishna and vowed to destroy the Krishna and his Yadava clan.

Salva had done great tapas to Shiva and had been given an aerial vehicle called the Saubha which was as big as a palace and which had miraculous powers like becoming invisible and appearing at different places at the same time. He requested an extremely high-tech aerial vehicle (i.e., a vimana) by which he might destroy the city of Dwarka and kill his hated enemy, Lord Krishna. The accomplished architect/engineer Maya Danava fulfills Salva's request

"This unassailable vehicle was filled with darkness and could go anywhere. Upon obtaining it, Salva, remembering the Varishnis' enmity toward him, proceeded to the city of Dwarka."

He flew over Dwaraka in the Saubha and destroyed the outer woodlands and gardens. Then he directed his attack against the bastions of the city so that his army which was marching over land could easily penetrate it. Flashes of lightning, hail stones, cyclonic storms and clouds of dust were released from the Saubha which was equipped with all the latest type of weapons! Pradyumna and some of the other sons of Krishna ably defended the city for twenty seven days but were overpowered by Salva’s superior forces.

Lord Krishna heard of the attack and hurried to his son’s rescue and appeard in his shining chariot to confront King Salva in battle and there ensued a mighty war between the super human, Krishna and the alien- Salva. When Salva saw Krishna's chariot on the battlefield, he thereupon released a great and powerful weapon which "flew through the sky with a roaring sound like a great meteor". This sounds a lot like a blazing rocket! In this Krishna is said to have fired arrows which resembled thunderbolts and balls of lightning and brilliant piercing rays of the sun. As Krishna began his counterattack, Salva engages the special powers of his vimana in an all out effort to avoid destruction. The weapons used by Salva makes one suspect that he was using alien technology. His spacecraft made of metal seemed to appear simultaneously at different places like the UFOs.

"The airplane occupied by Salva was very mysterious. It was so extraordinary that sometimes many airplanes would appear to be in the sky, and sometimes there were apparently none. Sometimes the plane was visible and sometimes not visible, and the warriors of the Yadu dynasty were puzzled about the whereabouts of the peculiar airplane. Sometimes they would see the airplane on the ground, sometimes flying in the sky, sometimes resting on the peak of a hill, and sometimes floating on the water. The wonderful airplane flew in the sky like a whirling firebrand—it was not steady even for a moment." (Bhaktivedanta, 1986)

Lord Krishna first destroyed King Salva's "great weapon," by discharging his own missile, described as being "bright as the sun in the sky". (These sound more like hi-tech missiles and anti-missils rather than what we think of as ordinary "arrows"!) He then disabled Salva's vimana completely by releasing an overwhelming shower of destructive missiles; and eventually "Salva's wondrous vimana burst into pieces and fell into the sea".

Salva miraculously escapes the doomed vimana at the last minute, and on foot, rushes vehemently at his hated enemy. The latter, "shining like the sun rising over the mountains," ushers forth the final blow by utilizing a "brilliant discus". Thus, after a tremendously high-tech battle, the evil King Salva and his flying machine are finally brought to an ignominious end.

MIGRATION TO DWARAKA

Post Kamsa's slay, Jarasandha, the powerful King of Magadha, was the father-in-law of Kamsa. He had a powerful army. He was angry with Krishna for killing Kamsa and was roused to fury by the distress of his daughters. He was determined to kill Krishna. He marched with a big army to Mathura. Krishna mobilised the Yadava youths.Jarasandha's army camped outside the fort. Krishna attacked the enemy's forces like lightning. The Magadha soldiers fled. Jarasandha was filled with shame. He invaded Mathura with a much bigger force. Several kings also joined him

Krishna's army met the enemy half way and attacked even before Jarasandha could reach Mathura. The Magadha forces were not prepared for this assault. In the confusion their own elephants crushed them. But again and again Jarasandha attacked Mathura and did so seventeen times. But how long could this kind of war go on? Krishna observed that the strength of the Yadavas was diminishing. It is not enough to fight heroically on the battlefield. When one is at a disadvantage one should retreat from the battlefield, and should strike again at the right moment and destroy the enemies. When the Magadha forces attacked for the seventeenth time Krishna led all his people to Dwaraka, by a secret route.

Krishna built Dwaraka to protect the Yadavas from Jarasandha. Dwaraka was surrounded by the sea. And it was  an impregnable fortress.

MARRIAGE WITH RUKMINI AND SLAY OF SHISUPALA:

Balaram married Revathi, the daughter of Prajapathi Raivata. Rukmini was the daughter of King Bhishmaka of Vidarbha. She was as beautiful as she was good. She had fallen in love with Krishna. She had the blessings of her father also. But her elder brother Rukmi would not listen to her. He argued that Krishna was the son of a cowherd and belonged to a low caste. He decided that she should marry a king, Shishupala by name. Rukmini wept in misery and sent word to Krishna. Krishna came to Vidarbha, put Rukmini in his chariot and made off for Dwaraka.

Rukmi the brother of Rukmini forced the wedding with the instigation and active support of Jaraasandha, Shishupala, Poundraka, Dantavaktra, Vithuratha, Shaalva and such others evil-mined enemy Kings who were all executed by Krishna eventually. Rukmi attacked Krishna and so did the soldiers of the enemy kings but the invincible Krishna took away as she was deeply in love with him. Rukmi took a vow not to enter Kundinapara City of Vidarbha Kingdom if he did not subdue or kill Krishna in the battles before the famed Rukmini- Krishna Elopment! Krishna and Rukmini holy wedding took place at Dwaraka with great pomp in the presence of the parents, foster parents, Balarama, Rukmini’s father Bhishmaka.

Shishupala or Sisupala was son of Damaghosha, king of Chedi, by Srutadeva, sister of Vasudeva; he was therefore cousin of Krishna. Shishupal was born with three eyes and four arms, and brayed like an ass. It was predicted that he would be normal when he sits on a person who is going to kill him.Shisupala was Krishna's cousin. When Krishna kept him in his lap, his two hands and third eye disappeared. Shisupala grew jealous of Krishna. Shisupala's mother got a promise from Krishna that he would not kill her son. Krishna promised that he would forgive hundred offenses by him. At the battlefield of Krukshetra, Krishna forgave his 100 insults and killed him when he offended him after the hundredth time.

MARRIAGE WITH SATYABHAMA AND SLAY OF NARAKASURA:

Satyabhama, Wife Of Lord KrishnaSatyabhama is the daughter of King Satrajit who is believed to be the incarnation of Bhudevi. Satrajit is the owner of Syamantaka jewel who does not part from it even once. Once Krishna asked for the jewel and Satrajit denied him. Prasena, brother of Satrajit went for hunting with the jewel and was killed by a lion.Satrajit got angry on Krishna mistaking him the killer of his brother for the jewel.  Krishna searched the jewel and found it with Jambhavan. Jambhavan mistook him to be a trespasser and both fought. Krishna defeated Jambhavan and took the jewel to Satrajit. Satrajit apologized for his acts and offered his daughter Satyabhama for marriage.

Narakasura was a demon king, ruling Pragjothishyapur. He gained a boon from Brahma that he would die only in the hands of his mother Bhudevi. Armed with the boon, he ruled like a despot. Even though Naraka was the son of divinity, he had the nature of a demon.  Naraka was powerful and he took pleasure in terrorising the inhabitants of the three worlds.

Narakasura captured Lord Indra and snatched sixteen women and imprisoned them in his palace.Satyabhama heard of this and got infuriated about this. Satyabhama and Krishna declared war against Narakasura. Satyabhama and Narakasura fought fiercely but Naraksura fought with great skills. Krishna pretend to faint on a attack by him which further angered Satyabhama. She doubled her strength and killed him. Naraksura requested a boon from her that his death should be celebrated with colorful lights which we celebrate as Deepavali.

Satyabhama freed all the sixteen thuosand captive women from palace. Krishna married all sixteen thousand of them to restore their honour which they lost on being kidnapped by Narakasura but never had any physical relationship with them. But it is also said that Krishna took 16008 forms and lived with all his wives in seperate palaces for each.

DEFEAT OF BRAHMA:
Lord Brahma wanted to test Krishna's divine power. So he kidnapped all of Krishna's friends while they were sleeping and kept them in sleep. Krishna understood the trick of Brahma and felt bad for Brahma's act.To convince the boys' parents he took the forms of all boys and cattles and returned home with them. The boys' parents felt something that their sons' faces glow with some extra-ordinary divinity but convinced that they are their children. For nearly one year this continued. Lord Brahma driven by curiosity went to Mathura only to see the boys playing as usual with Krishna. Brahma understood what happened and the power of Krishna and sent the real boys home.

The boys returned to their original place where they were a year before they got kindnapped. They woke up and thought they were slept for few minutes without understanding that one year has passed. Krishna received them without any difference as if nothing had happened. The boys thought that whatever happened in their life in the one year was their dream and returned to their homes. Now the parents were able to feel that that the divine glow was missing from their children's faces and felt disappointed. After all they are ordinary boys and not divine Krishna.

ENTIRE UNVERSE IN THE MOUTH:

Krishna grew up as a naughty who does all kinds of mischives bringing headache to all gopikas. Frequently he steals butter from pots at his home, from neighbour hood's pots, breaks open the vessels carried by the women, unties all the cows and plays with them. One day Krishna put some soil in his mouth. Scared by his act Balaram told to Yasodha what he has done. Yasodha told Krishna that it is not good for health if he eats soil. But little Krishna denied that he did not put soil in his mouth. Yasodha asked him to open his mouth and Krishna opened. Yasodha who peeped his mouth only to see the entire universe inside it. She got fainted on seeing that. When she awake she understood her son is not an ordinary boy but His Supreme God Himself. Krishna understood her thoughts and erased what see saw from her memory with his divine poweers. Hence Yasodha was back to normal as mother of Krishna.

Krishna established himself as a Divine boy with his divine powers and done miracles for the welfare of his people right from his childhood.

THE BEGINNING OF KRISHNA's DESTINY

KAMSA's SLAY:
The main purpose Krishna's birth is to slay his maternal uncle Kamsa. Krishna faced several forms of threats from Kamsa but he broke all his wands with his powers. Kamsa day by day got scared about Krishna and wanted to put an end to it. He again imprisioned Devaki and Vasudeva and planned for Krishna's murder. He planned a trick to invite from Vrindavan to Mathura.

Youth Krishna and his brother Balaram set for Mathura along with some gopikas and gopalas. Kamsa arranged for an attack by elephants on their to Mathura. But Krishna managed to kill the elephant and continue his journey. Kamsa sent two wrestlers to kill the brothers but both Krishna and Balaram killed the wrestlers and continued to the Kamsa's palace.
Kamsa got bewildered with fear and shouted to throw the boys from the palace and imprison Nanda foster father of Krishna and those supporters of Yadava community who were shouting in favour of Krishna Balaramas be brought to book, their cows and properties be confiscated. Krishna smiled and jumped up from the wrestling arena to Kamsa, threw down his Swarna Kireeta / golden headgear, pulled his long hair to floor him, throttled him and mercilessly dispatched him to Narakaloka (Hell).

After the slay of Kamsa, Krishna ascended the throne of Mathura to King Ugrasena who was imprisoned by his son. Krishna and Balaram then left Mathura.

Tale of Two Dwarbalakas:

Once one of the Trimurthy Maha Vishnu told his gate keepers Jay and Vijay that he need rest and went inside the sea at Vaikunt. At that time Saptharishis (Seven Sages) came to Vaikundam to meet Maha Vishnu. The Gate Keepers refused to allow them to see Him as He is at rest. Despite several attempts the Sages were not allowed and instead ill-treated by them. Angered Sages cursed them to leave His abode and be born as asuras. Terrified by the powerful curse, Jay and Vijay bowed His feet for remedy. Since curses by Sages cannot be reverted back, His Supreme God gave them two options. Either to born as His devotees for Seven times or be born as His enemies three times. Unable to part away from Him for Seven births Jay and Vijay opted to be born as Asuras get killed by His Supreme God three times and return to Vaikundam.
  • Hiranyakasipu and Hiranyaksha killed by Himself in NARASIMHA
  • Ravana and Kumbhakarna killed by Him as RAM and finally
  • Kamsa and Shisupala killed by the Mythological super hero
KRISHNA

A Flashback which crossed many tens of thousand years is going to be rewinded in this article.

Known as Vasudeva Krishna or Krishna, He born in this world not only fulfill the mission of his birth but also to focus on reducing the Injustice which prevailed leading to the burdening of sins on Bhoomadevi, the mother of Earth.

The article travels through the timeline to Dwapara Youga back in 5000 years where he born as descendent of Yadava , the clan of King Yadu through Vasudeva at Mathura and brought up as a cute cowherd boy through Nanda at Vrindavan and aroused to the King of Yadavas in the city of Dwaraka.

BIRTH:
Devaki, daughter of Mathura King Ugrasena and sister of Kamsa, married King Vasudeva on an auspicious day. When Devaki set for her new home with her husband, a divine voice heard from the sky telling that Kamsa shall be killed by the eight child born in Devaki's womb. Frightened by the prophecy, Kamsa tried to kill his sister. But Vasudeva pleaded for his wife's life and promised to handover the children born to them to him. Kamsa spared his sister and imprisoned the couple.

Kamsa killed six children as soon as they were born. The seventh child escaped from the fate and got settled in womb of Rohini, wife of Vasudeva as Balarama. Eigth child was swapped with baby girl Yogamaya born to Nanda and Yasodha which survived in Vrindavan as the divine super hero KRISHNA. Yogamaya warned Kamsa that his countdown has began and disappeared.

CHILDHOOD :
Krishna now being the son of Nanda and Yasotha started to live in Mathura. Little Krishna is a mischivious boy however his mischiefs are much enjoyed by his parents and people of Mathura.

The most important significance of Krishna is, he is aware of who he is and for what purpose he was born. Even as a infant he has started his super hero miracles.

PUTANA's End:
Kamsa believed that his slayer is very near around him. Hence he sent demoness Putana, the killer of infants to kill Krishna. Putana disguised herself as beautiful woman and set her journey to fulfill her mission. She finally found him at Mathura and went to his home. She took the infant Krishna and started to breast feed the poisoned milk to the child. But she started to scream as the child squeezed her breast and sucked her. She turned to her natural form and finally died of pain.

DEFEAT OF INDRA:
People of Mathura made preparations for annual offering of their fortune to Lord Indra and no one concentrated on their routine job. Krishna suggessted them that work is first and everybody should do their work first and then only concentrate on worship. Hence villagers returned to their work.

Indra got angered on this and decided to destroy Mathura with huge flood. All people of Mathura gathered at a place not knowing how to tackle the situation. Little Krishna understood the evil intention of Indra and decided to rescue his people. He lifted Govardhana Hill with his little finger and sheltered the people under it until floods are drained.

Indra finally understood it is the Supreme God who protected the people and apologized for his acts ordered the rain clouds to move away from Vrindavan.
